Westport chair
Definition
- Designed by Thomas Lee in 1904 and patented by Harry Bunnell (a local carpenter) in 1905, it takes its name from the town on the Champlain side of the river (NY, USA) where it was made. The design, with its deep, sloping seat and wide armrests and back, is ideal for relaxing. It was the model for the famous Adirondack chair in the 1920s, designed for gardens and outdoor spaces in the USA. The Westport Chair has achieved its significance as a popular and enduring part of the American summer vernacular.
