Definition
- Upholstered armchair with closed up-holstered sides, cuffs and a seat cushion. The cushions may be movable on straps or with fixed upholstery, with a generally wide, deep, low base and a relatively high back. The term appeared around 1725, although the sofa existed earlier, in the late 17th century. They are French-style chairs, copied in England and Germany.
