Boxwood
Definition
- Boxwood ("Buxus sempervirens") is a tree of the Buxaceae family. It grows throughout Europe, as well as in Asia and Africa. In Spain, it grows mainly in the Pyrenees and other mountainous areas in the north. In the Balearic islands, the boxwood of Mahón or Menorca grows. The wood has a bright yellow colour and a uniform appearance, with diffuse pores that are not visible to the naked eye and no apparent veins. It is hard and heavy, with a very fine grain and straight or interlocked grain. Although difficult to carve, the wood has excellent dimensional stability and is very resistant to wear. It has been used in marquetry and for the manufacture of small objects such as combs, scent pots, etc. It polishes and engraves well and has been used to make musical instruments, bobbins, toys, spoons, forks, etc.
