Definition

  • From Greek: a little flower, from anthos flower. An ornamental design that alternates plant motifs such as palmettes and lotuses. In classical decoration they emerge from the calyx of an acanthus that is joined by others with S-shaped scrolls. The design is found in Greek, Byzantine, medieval and neoclassical styles. The term comes from the Greek word anthos meaning 'flower'.
