Sapele mahogany  

Definition

  • From sapele, sapeli from native name in West Africa. Quality wood originally from tropical Africa, its scientific name is Entandrophragma cylindricum. Hard wood, reddish in colour, which in modern cabinetmaking replaces American mahogany. This wood is used in cabinetmaking and shipbuilding. Comparisons with mahogany are frequent, sapele being thinner and denser.
