- n. from Old French, from marqueter to inlay, from marque. Used for the technique of surface decoration in which small pieces of wood or other material such as bone, ivory, tortoise shell, mother-of-pearl, etc., are superimposed or inlaid on another wooden surface to form a decorative veneer.
