Definition

  • A technique of reporting and pictorial decoration in which a stencil is used which carries the drawing or design to be transferred to another surface. The outline of the design is perforated or the outline is cut out and then the stencil is placed on the area to be decorated and a colouring substance (in powder, paste or liquid form) is applied to the front of the stencil. Stencilling by perforating the outline of a drawing is one of the most common techniques used in drawing and painting.
