Definition
- n. Middle English, probably from Old English scylfe; akin to Old Norse hl?thskjalf Odin's seat. Boards, planks, or slabs of wood or any other rigid material fixed in a horizontal position to a wall or in a case, to hold books or other objects as in a bookcase or cabinet. They come in a wide variety of sizes and types: they can rest on the floor, or they can be suspended from the wall, or be built into the wall. Sometimes they have railings to act as a stopper.
