Gondola chair
Definition
- High-backed chair with a concave backrest, the upper crossbar descends in a regular ramp to meet the front armrests or the upper part of the front legs. When the crossbar is horizontal, the concave sides of the backrest meet the top of the front legs. They are so-called because they resembled to 18th-century gondolas. The gondola chair and the gondola chair are the late (early 19th century) forms of older seating: the gondola or office chair. Their antecedents date back to the 18th century, although they extend as early as the beginning of the 19th century, becoming extremely popular from the fall of Napoleon until the 1940s.
