Preferred term

Settee

Definition

  • n. changed from settle. A long seat for two or more people, with a back and arms. The settee was introduced in the late 17th century, and often took the form of two conjoined chair backs. Settees with upholstered backs and arms were also introduced, and such seats, variously formed and decorated, became permanently established in English furnishing. The terms sofa and settee are virtually interchangeable in 20th-century usage but there is a distinction between the two; a settee is less fully upholstered than a sofa and can even be unupholstered.
