Preferred term
English rolled arms
Definition
- The original sofa was designed by George Smith in the 19th century. These sofas are characterised by a tight backrest with a slight slope. It has low, curved arms that resemble the curve of the human arm. Its curved lower frame is shown as well as its legs. In the older variant of these sofas, designers use a T-shaped seat cushion. This creates a visual effect that the sofa appears smaller than it is. These feature loose cushions instead of a T-shaped cushion. Depending on their upholstery, colour and design features, this type of sofa can look English, classic casual, American farmhouse, mid-century or contemporary.
