Definition

  • Any Old World coniferous tree of the genus Cedrus, having spreading branches, needle-like evergreen leaves, and erect barrel-shaped cones: family Pinaceae See also cedar of Lebanon, deodar. Any of various other conifers, such as the red cedars and white cedars. t is a Mediterranean wood, widely used in Renaissance Italy. American cedar (or false cedar) has been imported since the middle of the 16th century: it was used at El Escorial and was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries for arches, buffets, sideboards and writing instruments. It is carried from Central America (Mexico and Nicaragua) in the red cedar and white cedar varieties. Because of its pleasant scent, it is used in the woodwork. In furniture it is used in massifs and is also used in construction.
