Definition
- n. Old English ?are; related to Old Norse eyra, Old High German ?ra, Gothic aus?, Greek ous, Latin auris. Each of the up-curved ends of a crest rail that allows the head to rest laterally. The ear may be fixed or movable. Often found in armchairs of the fauteuils à oreilles, from the 18th century and in Chippendale chairs.
