- n. From the Old English "?cg" and Middle English "egge" "agge" "hegge" among others. Ornamental pattern that is placed along walls, floors and ceilings and usually consists of repeated elements of the same ornamentation. Also, the trimming of the edge, that is, the trimming which forms an edge to anything; a border, fringe, etc. sewn on the edge of a garment; a border surrounding a flower-bed; and the like.
