Elastic chair
Definition
- Patented by Samuel Gragg in 1808, reproduces the curves of the Greek Klismos chair seen in ancient art. It is decorated with acanthus leaves, peacock feathers and clovedn hoof feet. The most innovative aspect of its production was the use of steam-bent wood, which allowed each arm to be formed from a single piece. This resulted in a lightweight, flexible design that was less expensive to produce. For this reason, it is considered an innovative design and a forerunner of the European Thonet design (Gebrüder Thonet) in 1853.
