Veneering
Definition
- A generic term used to designate the technical process in which one material in the form of a veneer is applied on top of another to modify its characteristics (texture, colour, appearance, etc.). In cabinetmaking, veneering is one of the forms of marquetry for ornamental purposes, which consists of covering the surface of ordinary wood of furniture or objects with thinner sheets of fine wood or tortoise shell, mother-of-pearl or ivory, depending on the type of decorative motif to be composed. In goldsmithing and metalworking, the term is generally used for the application of a thin sheet of metal, usually gold or silver, to the outside of an object made of another metal. It is sometimes cut into various shapes for decorative purposes (cut sheet metal).
