Leg
Definition
- n. late 13c., from a Scandinavian source, probably Old Norse leggr "a leg, bone of the arm or leg," from Proto-Germanic lagjaz (cognates Danish læg, Swedish läg "the calf of the leg"). Vertical supports for a piece of furniture, typically used for longer supports of modified cylindrical, columnar, or pier-like form. Furniture legs are among the most distinctive features as guides in determining time and place of origin. A few general types have their individual styles and imitations, such as the cabriole, turned, tapered, fluted, concave, etc.
