Folding benches

Definition

  • The exact country of origin of this type of folding bench is not known, although it has been repeated throughout the 16th and 19th centuries and has ended up being characteristic of Spain. They were in use from the Middle Ages until the end of the 16th century. The top is folded with hinges, i.e. the back folds over the seat on the bench. In some cases, the legs are those that can be folded under the lid and are fastened using fasteners attached with bolts and nuts when they are to be used. This typology allowed them to be removed and stored. They are usually simple, even low-cost, highly functional pieces of furniture. There are some stylistic variations and small changes, but in general, the structure is maintained.
