- n. Old English teld; related to Old High German zelt tent, Old Norse tjald tent. Used for the deviation that is formed by an obtuse angle with the seat to make it more comfortable, this makes that chair tilted backwards. This inclination began in the Renaissance and was predominant, above all, in the Baroque period.
