Concept information
Preferred term
Grinding
Definition
- Finishing technique using emery, a natural abrasive, a variety of corundum, blackish blue in colour, which is usually adhered to a cloth or rigid backing and has different grain sizes. It is used to clean and polish different materials, especially fine stones. In the case of glass, grinding is used as a decorative technique because of the resulting contrast between the matt ground areas and the brightness of the rest of the piece.
