Strap work
Definition
- A narrow, ornamental band consisting of a repeated pattern of crossed or interlaced elements. It is typical of Elizabethan and Jacobean work, and was probably imported with French Renaissance and Italian and Flemish models. It also appears in much German work of the 16th and 17th centuries and in 19th-century revivals.
