Definition
- Gr Atlantes, pl. of Atlas. Half- or full-length male sculpture, standing or squatting that fulfills the function of a column in classical architecture and was imitated in other styles, such as Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque and even Modernism. It can be used as a supporting element or as an ornamental motif. They are also occasionally found in furniture from the 16th century onwards.
