Preferred term
Venetian-style mirror
Definition
- Venetian mirror or Venetian-style mirror: The term, now more loosely used, comes from the Venetian monopoly in this area during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It refers both to the glass of special purity and beauty (Murano glass) and to the style. Venetian craftsmen produced beautiful mirrors with glass frames. Often the mirror fragments, set around the main mirror, formed bold geometric compositions.
