Barcelona chairs

Definition

  • The Barcelona Chair or MR90 model was created by Lily Reich in collaboration with her business partner and colleague Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. The Barcelona Chair achieves the serene lines and refined proportions and materials characteristic of Lily Reich and Mies van der Rohe. It is supported on each side by two flat chromed steel rods. Seen from the side, the single curve of the bar that forms the backrest and front legs of the chair intersects with the S-curve of the bar that forms the seat and back legs, making an intersection between the two. This simple form derives from a long history of precedent, from ancient Egyptian folding stools to 19th century neoclassical seating. The cantilevered seat and back of the original chairs were upholstered in white goatskin with piping and button detailing. The frame of the furniture was originally made of polished stainless steel, while the seat and back surfaces were made of pigskin leather. Later, in 1950, adjustments were made to the design for large-scale production. Although only two Barcelona chairs were made for the German Pavilion, the design was put into production and became so popular that, except for a period of sixteen years, it has been in production since 1929.
