Console table

Definition

  • From French, shortened from Old French consolateur one that provides support, hence, supporting bracket, from Latin cons?l?tor a comforter. A table fixed to a wall with its top supported by corbels or brackets rather than by the usual four legs. It is thus similar to a supported shelf and is not designed to serve as a stand-alone surface. These types of tables are made to be leaned against the wall, usually without drawers and with a second tabletop immediately on the floor. It is usually decorative and is sometimes accompanied by a mirror. The tops are often made of hard stone or marble.
