Definition

  • A seat designed for reading with a bookrest to hold the book. The bookrest may extend beyond the back of the chair, allowing the reader to sit or straddle the chair to face the book. Created in England in the 18th century, they may be upholstered or padded, covered with leather and usually topped by a curved horizontal crossbar.
