- Papel vegetal (es)
Note
- Thin sheet or foil made from the cross-linking of vegetable fibres, mixed with water and, usually, some kind of adhesive. The paste obtained is subjected to different operations until it becomes a flexible, resistant sheet suitable for retaining pigments and liquid or solid dyes. The manual production process gave way to increasingly mechanised methods, such as the manufacture of continuous paper during the 18th century. During the 19th century, the possibility of making paper directly from the cellulose of certain varieties of trees was discovered. Fillers, adhesives, dyes and additives of various kinds are added to the resulting pulp in order to improve or change its mechanical and optical properties, such as strength, flexibility, brittleness or colour. Paper is the main medium for writing, as well as for different artistic expressions (drawing, watercolour, etc.).
