Definition

  • Strong, pale yellow-brown wood from trees of the genus Betula, which have a straight grain and uniform texture ending in a smooth surface. Birch ("Betula pendula" / "Betula alba" / "Betula pubescens") is a tree of the Betulaceae family, growing in southern Europe and Asia Minor. It has darker differentiated growth rings, diffuse pores, visible woody rays, straight grain and very fine grain. It is easily stained and varnished. Birch is used for tool handles, plywood, hoops, shoe heels, flooring, furniture, joinery, turnery and firewood. In solid form, it has been commonly used for drawers and furniture frames.
