Definition

  • Old English cypresse, from Latin cyparissus, from Greek kuparissos; related to Latin cupressus. The cypress is a tree of the Cupressaceae family of the genus "Cupressus". It is native to the eastern Mediterranean, from where it spread to several continents, including Australia. In Europe it is cultivated for ornamental purposes, especially the species "Cupressus sempervirens", better known as Mediterranean cypress. Wood from trees of the genus Cupressus, native to Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas, and known for its durability. Pale yellowish colour, with rather yellowish sapwood and pinkish brown or light tobacco heartwood. It is non-porous and has distinct growth rings and straight or slightly irregular grain, with many knots.
