- Element ornamental a base d'éssers fantàstics, vegetals i animals, complexament enllaçats i combinats formant conjunts de figures fantàstiques. És un tema utilitzat a partir del renaixement. Sol estar format, en la seua part superior, per un cap o tors humà o animal que s'acaba en un joc de plantes o elements vegetals per baix. El nom procedeix de la decoració romana pompeiana descoberta a la fi del segle XV.
